Structured Essay Questions
SEQ TYPE 1

E.g.- The university admission criteria was the most important reasons for the conflict in Sri Lanka.
- GIVEN FACTORS
- WORDS LIKE “MOST”

STEP 1 : Answer Question First.
E.G.- Yes, I Agree. ( Can Add – to a small extent/large extent)


STEP 2 : Explain Given Factor
(use about 1/3 page)


STEP 3 : Explain 2 other factor
E.G.- However, there are other reasons/ other factors.
(They are ________ and ________.)
STEP 4: ARGUMENT

(IF THE QUESTION IS 8 MARKS, THEN IT WILL MOST PROBABLY HAVE ARGUMENT)

Example of Type 2 Questions.
“The IRA was responsible for the conflict in Northern Ireland”.
Do you agree? Explain Your Answer.

STEP 1: Answer Questions First.
(IRA is responsible/ not responsible)
E.g (IRA was responsible)

STEP 2: Explain 1 Side
( Explain responsible / irresponsible)

Step 3: Explain the other side
Aim For Level 4 first, then forward to step 4.

Step 4 : Argument

Link Step 2 and Step 3 together, by writing – However,the IRA was also partly responsible for the conflict.

Whatever you do, you must give both side !
The essay need not be balanced, one side can be more than the other.

Does Source A Proves that?

STEP 1 : Answer Question First
(Yes, it Proves).

STEP 2 : Detect Bias

STEP 3: Explain Detect Bias
- Tell me why is it a pro/anti/fair propaganda.
- E.G. The source is from a Sinhalese and yet he is saying something bad about the Sinhalese Government. This shows that he is not taking side and it is a fair source.

STEP 4: Explain the Source
- E.G. The source tells me that the Sinhalese government discriminated against the Tamils.

STEP 5: Evidence
STEP 6: Cross-reference to other sources.
C.R to one supporting sources.
- E.G. checks with other sources to tell if they show that the Sinhalese Government discriminate the Tamils.
C.R to one not supporting the source.

E.g – When I cross refer to Source B, Source B tells me that the Tamils were discriminated by the Sinhalese Government.
- The Evidence is “ _____________”
CHECKING IS VERY IMPORTANT !
Since Source A + B says the same thing on _________
Source A is reliable.
a) C.R to 1 Source that say the same thing on the issue.
b) Give Evidence
c) Checking.

Repeat A – B where you cross refer to the Source.

STEP 7: Explain usefulness - A source might not be reliable can be still useful.


The source reflects certain Group/people opinion/perspective. E.G – It may not be reliable but the source is still useful because it shows the opinions of Iraqis in Iraq.
